That Nearsighted

I texted my friend Lisa, “do you want to go to the Phillips Collection with us on Saturday? The Bonnard show is closing soon.

She wasn’t familiar with Pierre Bonnard.

I described him as the near sighted impressionist painter who uses luminous colors. “Near sighted?”

I don’t really know if he was nearsighted or not, but as a very nearsighted person myself, I think the way his figures are often blending in with the landscape so much that they almost disappear makes me wonder if this is an aesthetic choice or how he sees the world.  Also his luminous colors bring to mind how water or light on an object can sparkle in your vision when you take off your glasses.

I’m not saying this to disrespect him, I adore his paintings. Seeing his work makes me want to paint.

It is a theory of mine that we all see the world slightly differently, be it color, contrast or fuzzy edges.   One of the reasons we appreciate artists is because they show us those different visions.
